Our Poems in Spain!

 When you write a poem... you never know where in the world it will end up. 

All you students who write a poem for the Noho Mai Given Words competition - your poems are currently in Spain! Yes! Here is a photo of one of the judges, sitting down in the Plaza de Oriente, Madrid reading your poems!

Manu

at dusk

he stands proudly by the dock 

just like the nights before,

his cold eyes watch the sea 

thinking of his ancestors and loved ones

I see the black-backed gull

raise his wings 

the colour of night 

and take flight 

chasing the fading sun

I'll hold my breath 

till he returns here tomorrow

Noho Mai

Some of our Russley Writers have been hard at work writing poems for some lockdown poetry competitions. 

This challenge was a 'given word' poem. The writers were given five specific words which they had to incorporate into their poem for National Poetry Day. Poems could be written in English, te reo Māori, or a mixture of the two, as long as the five words are included in either language. 

Here are the words:

pō / dusk

hau / breath

tūpuna / ancestors

hiki / raise

karoro / black-backed gull
