CHRISTMAS IS...

CHRISTMAS IS…
by Kimberly C

Christmas is the rustle of wrapping paper
mountains of presents and laughter
and happiness

I can smell the sweet meet
on the BBQ

Christmas is love and hugs
and a kiss
the taste of chips crunching
the sound of kids screaming and jumping up

Christmas is love and family
and kids and food
definitely!

CHRISTMAS IS
by Josh T

Christmas is
mouth-watering turkey
it is the rustle of soft wrapping paper
Christmas is a
time for crackers
pull the thing and see what you have won
It is time for
the toys to be unleashed
like a stampede of dinosaurs chasing a rabbit

Christmas is a cricket ball
bashing the wickets

CHRISTMAS IS…
by Fergus

Christmas is
fun, laughter,
ringing bells

Christmas is zooming
down
a steep
waterslide
like a tornado
and at the end your dad
fishes you out

CHRISTMAS IS…
by Phoenix

Christmas is pavlova on the plate
with whipped cream out of the bowl
kiwis, strawberries, M&Ms, chocolate
and oranges.

Christmas is Christmas crackers
going boom crack
yay, I won something!

Christmas is Santa saying ho, ho, ho
coming down the chimney
giving presents to all.

Christmas is mistletoe
people kissing
eww, not me!

Christmas is presents getting unwrapped
Yay! I got an ipod touch!

Christmas is songs playing
over and over
and over and over
again.

CHRISTMAS IS…
by Farren

Christmas is pav with chocolate pebbles
strawberries
with whipped cream.

Christmas is the big breath you take
when you see all the presents.

Christmas is the magical smiles on
everyone’s faces.

Christmas is Santa poking his head
through the window.

Christmas is the time your mum and dad
bring out the mistletoe… yuck!

Christmas is the time of year to bring
out your inner elf.

Christmas is Christmas carols on
your doorstep.

Christmas is when family come and have
a Christmas dinner.

CHRISTMAS IS...
by Ella S

Christmas is shelling peas
fresh from the garden.

Christmas is magical laughter,
fun and surprises.

I feel the summer sun getting brighter
in my eyes.

I smell yummy pavlova
with strawberries, bananas
and kiwifruit…
the adults feast.

CHRISTMAS IS…
by Kim S

Ripping Christmas presents open
for a surprise

It is Christmas crackers popping
winning a mini prize

It is delicious desserts getting eaten
in one bite

It is going on holiday to a place
you’ve never been before

It is spending time with your aunties, uncles,
cousins and sisters
as a family at Christmas

You see your family laughing and joking
you know it is the best
spending time with family is the best thing
you will ever have in your life.

CHRISTMAS IS...
Christmas is … waking up to the rustling noises of wrapping paper.
Christmas is … unwrapping presents with family.
Christmas is … a treat having family there
our special Christmas dinner, roast chicken
and for desert it is chocolate pudding.
Christmas is … playing with Christmas presents

Colour Poetry

Two contrasting colour poems from Team Awa Nui students:

I am the rose in your butterfly garden.
I am the blood in your body, flowing around keeping you alive.
I am the cheek on your face, blushing when you're around a boy.
I am the fire extinguisher keeping the foam inside.
I am the crimson Christmas lights on the glowing tree, shining my bright self.
I am the stop sign, stopping people from crashing... but people do sometimes.
I am strawberries with icing sugar on top.
by Phoenix, Year 6

I am the cold Arctic ocean. I am the sky on a summer's morning. I am Lake Tekapo, full of fish swishing around. I am a Russley School top.

Athletics day poetry

I could feel my heart racing.
I saw people getting ready.
I could taste sweat.
I could feel the grass on my feet.
I heard people cheering.
On your marks
get set... GO!

- by Alex C

Read on for more athletics day poetry by our year 5 and 6 authors:

Athletics Poem

Shot-put bangs
shaking the ground
Discus flying
falling
Thump! Thump! Thump!

Smiling cheering children
Go! Go! Go!
Speeding feet
Zoom! Zoom! Zoom!

On Your Marks!

On your marks, get set, go!!!
People screaming as loud as a tornado.
Sweat pouring down into my mouth.
Ice block soothing.
Heart pounding with butterflies.
Kids playing like daffodils in the wind.
Shot-put landing, thump, thump!

- by Emelia

Athletics Day

Blossoms blowing
Streaming blood
Heart racing
Stomping past
Discus Flying

- by Phoenix

Athletics

shot-put vibrations
legs aching
people sprinting around me
blossom petals twirling off trees
smell victory
ice-block dripping down my mouth
sad athletics day is over

- by Farren

Athletics Day
by Ella S

Breezy wind
hot sun in my eyes
people cheering happily

Mr Ish announced the winner

ME!

My heart was beating
like a crazy washing machine

The delicious taste of iceblocks
Fast relay team
like a t-rex stomping

I smell sand
Achoo!
Sand blowing everywhere

People sprinting
and
jumping

Phoenix's Place

I’m in the Arctic. I can hear Arctic wolves howling. It’s started to snow. I look up at the light blue sky. I get my i-pad out. I’m listening to MKTO.

ANZAC poetry

ANZAC DAY

Dying soldiers
guns shooting terrifyingly
war planes shockingly firing
bombs
smells like smoke
shooting scary guns
killing poor innocent
soldiers
poppy fields at the
last post

by Kim S, year 6

ANZAC POEM

smells like smoke
sounds like the Last Post
looks like a battlefield
tastes like mud
feels like shattered glass

by Phoenix, YR 6

War
smells rotten
sounds like the last post
looks like 18,000 graves
feels broken

Metaphor Poetry

We studied Greg O'Connell's poem, My Grandad's Hands and noticed two things.

Firstly, that Greg used a lot of interesting nouns and verbs.
Secondly, he used metaphors* to describe his grandfather.

*Similes and metaphors compare two different things in a descriptive way. A simile uses the words 'as' or 'like' but a metaphor directly compares two things by saying one thing actually is the other.

We made a list of the nouns and verbs Greg used in his poem. Nouns (words that name a thing, person, place or idea) are the bones of good writing. Verbs (action or doing words) are the muscles.

Our writers chose a person in their own family as the subject for their poem. They then focussed on hunting for interesting nouns to create surprising metaphors to describe them.

My Brother's Smile
by Phoenix

My brother's smile
is a studded soccer boot,
his smell is a
blooming flower.
His legs are tall goalposts.
His hair is a lion's mane.
He is everything to me.

My Brother's Attitude
by Alex L

My brother's attitude is like a monkey's.
His eyes are Minotaur eyes,
his hair is bark from an oak tree.
His laugh is thunder,
his voice is a frog singing in a blender,
but he's the best gaming partner
in the world.

My Brother's Face
by Ollie

My brother is a monkey,
his eyes are chicken heads,
his ears are pointy swords,
his breath is a stinky garbage bin.
His hair is striking lightning,
his nose is a carrot,
and he is a fast cheetah.

My Brother
by Farren

His smile is a shining moon.
His eyes show blooming kindness.
His smell is a lime milkshake.
His hair is dark chocolate,
it is a black thunderstorm.
Caleb is a creative poet.
I love him.
