One Breath Poems

Inspired by Greg O'Connell's 'One Breath Poem', How to Swim a Length Underwater... some of our Team Roto (Year 3 & 4) Russley Writers penned their own poems (to be recited in a single breath)!

How to Survive A Rollercoaster
by Kimberly Curry

Hold on tight
click yourself in like a lunchbox
when we get ready time to hold on
backwards again, again, again,
up,
down,
when we go upside down make sure
your hands are in the air
like an inflated balloon
and then hold your breath
and let it out, 'Yes I did it!' SCREAM!

How to Ride a Hydroslide
by Kimberly Curry

Get ready to ride
then lie like a pancake
and hold your breath
and slip like glue
down we go,
up, down, around, blop, blip,
round the corner, over, up like a bird
and kick your legs and you'll go faster
cross-eyed, belly flop, sit down
like you're glued to the ground
SPLASH!

How to Use an Inhaler
by Joshua Thackwell

First you take off the lid like a tiger eating its prey
next you take a big puff
and get flustered no more...

ventolin saves your life.

  1. Hi Kimberly,
What marvellous poems! I think you have a real talent for creating vivid similes, such as "click yourself in like a lunchbox" and "slip like glue". These are fine poetic images that any poet would be proud of. Keep enjoying your words - especially because they bring enjoyment to others too.
    Kind regards,
    Greg O'Connell

  2. Hi Joshua,
What a fabulous poem! I really like all the exhaling 'f' sounds you packed in, such as: "First/off/puff/flustered/life". And I think it's great that you have chosen the comparison with a majestic tiger, which makes the inhaler-user seem powerful and stealthy. Keep enjoying your words - they are as natural to us as breath.
    Kind regards,
    Greg O'Connell
